Before a sweepstakes casino pays a prize, it checks that you are who you say you are, old enough under its rules, living somewhere it accepts, and not breaking its rules on fraud or multiple accounts. Expect to send a government photo ID, a recent proof of address and, often, a selfie. The catch is timing: at the brands we read, the full check is tied to redemption, so a problem tends to surface only after you have won.

Why do sweepstakes casinos check ID before paying?

The prize side is a contest with eligibility rules, and the operator has to prove a winner meets them. Chumba Casino’s terms spell out the purposes: meeting legal and regulatory obligations, preventing financial crime, and confirming, including by precise geolocation, that you are not in an excluded territory.

Age and fraud prevention are the other reasons, and the rules make the check decisive. High 5 Casino’s rules say a participant is not a winner, whatever the screen shows, until eligibility and the winning play have been verified, and that the check can be repeated each time you redeem. WOW Vegas says its document requests confirm you are the rightful account holder and protect the account.

Bigger prizes bring more questions. Chumba Casino’s terms describe extra checks on any single or combined redemption above US$2,000, which can include proof of where your money comes from, such as a payslip or bank statement.

What documents are usually requested?

WOW Vegas McLuck (Canada help centre)
Photo ID Driver’s licence, national ID document, passport or residence permit; front and back, all four corners visible Passport, driving licence, national ID, residence permit or Certificate of Status ID
Selfie Liveness check, and sometimes a selfie holding your ID A quick selfie with the document
Proof of address Utility bill or bank statement issued in the last 3 months, as a downloadable PDF Utility or phone bill, or bank statement, less than 90 days old
Not accepted Mobile phone bills, screenshots, edited documents, among others Blurry images; name and address must be clearly visible

WOW Vegas’s figures come from its help centre pages dated May and July 2026. McLuck’s come from its Canadian help centre, in an article last updated in 2024. Notice the difference on phone bills: one brand accepts them, the other does not, which is exactly the kind of detail that stalls a payout.

How old do you have to be?

The minimum is set by each brand, and it is not always your province’s age of majority.

  • WOW Vegas: its terms, version 9.0 of July 2026, require you to be over 18 or the age of majority where you live, whichever is higher.
  • McLuck: its Canadian help centre sets 21 or older.
  • US-only brands such as Chumba Casino, Stake.us, Pulsz and High 5 Casino set 21 in the rules we read.

Canada’s age of majority is set province by province. It is 18 in Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba, for example, and 19 in British Columbia, New Brunswick and the Northwest Territories. So an 18-year-old in Vancouver is below WOW Vegas’s floor, and anyone under 21 is below McLuck’s. Our provincial gambling guides cover what each province runs itself.

When does verification happen, and what goes wrong?

WOW Vegas says every player must complete verification before redeeming, that the process starts from the Redeem button, and that valid documents are usually approved within minutes. So it is possible to buy coins and play for a long time before anyone looks at your documents.

That is the catch. A name that does not match your ID exactly, an address that has changed, a bank account in someone else’s name or an address in an excluded province will show up at payout, not at sign-up. Chumba Casino’s terms keep a redemption pending until checks are complete, and allow the account to be closed or restricted if requested documents are not supplied within 30 days. WOW Vegas adds another wrinkle: once profile details are submitted you cannot edit them yourself, and a name or address change goes through support with documents.

The usual reasons a document is rejected are simple ones:

  • the ID is expired, cropped or blurry;
  • the proof of address is older than the brand allows, or is a screenshot instead of a PDF;
  • the name or address on the document does not match the account;
  • the payment method used for purchases is not in your name, which Chumba Casino’s terms forbid.

You are also handing a passport scan and a selfie to a company outside Canada: WOW Vegas’s operator is in Gibraltar and McLuck’s is in the Isle of Man. Read the privacy policy before you upload.

If a brand lets you verify early, doing it before you play means a mismatch costs you nothing. Then read what happens at redemption for what follows, and check which provinces each brand accepts before you send a single document. If the waiting and checking has become a source of stress, our responsible gambling resources list free helplines.

Questions people ask

What ID do sweepstakes casinos accept from Canadians?

Usually a valid government photo ID such as a passport, driver's licence or provincial ID card, plus a recent proof of address and often a selfie. McLuck's Canadian help centre also lists a residence permit and a Certificate of Status. Accepted proof of address differs: WOW Vegas refuses mobile phone bills, while McLuck lists phone bills as acceptable.

How old do you have to be to win a sweepstakes prize in Canada?

It depends on the brand. WOW Vegas's terms require you to be over 18 or the age of majority where you live, whichever is higher, which means 19 in provinces such as British Columbia. McLuck's Canadian help centre sets 21.

Can I verify my account before I win?

Some brands let you start verification from your account at any time, and doing it early means a mismatch shows up before you have a prize waiting. The rules still allow brands to check again at each redemption, so early verification is not a guarantee of a quick payout.
