Who owns DoubleDown Casino, and can Canadians play it?

DoubleDown reached the Apple, Google Play and Amazon stores in February 2012. Slot machine maker IGT owned the US operating company until 2017, when DoubleDown Interactive Co., Ltd., a Seoul company, bought it for about US$825 million. Its 2025 annual report says Korea’s DoubleU Games controls about 67% of the company, whose American depositary shares trade on Nasdaq as DDI. Its slots include licensed IGT titles, and the store listing names casino-floor games such as Double Diamond, DaVinci Diamonds and Wheel of Fortune.

The game is listed in both Canadian stores, priced in Canadian dollars. Its terms of use (last updated February 9, 2026) do not exclude Canada; instead they require you to be of the age of majority where you live and not to play where that would be illegal. In Canada that age is set provincially: 18 in Manitoba and 19 in British Columbia, for example. The store description goes further, saying the game is intended for players 21 and over.

The Canadian App Store rates the app 18+ for frequent simulated gambling, and Google Play shows Teen. DoubleDown’s help centre adds that some regions now require it to check the birthday on your app store account before the game will open; our parental controls guide covers the device side. And where the Canadian App Store lists Slotomania, House of Fun and Big Fish Casino in English only, DoubleDown’s listing includes French among six languages.

What are DoubleDown chips, and what is the game known for?

Chips are the only thing you bet. DoubleDown’s annual report states that chips cannot be withdrawn, moved between games or players, or redeemed for money, and its terms add that they may never be sold or traded and are forfeited if your account is closed.

Each login type (Facebook, Apple, Google, email or guest) is a separate account with its own balance. A second currency, DoubleDown Gold, comes from the DoubleDown Gift Shop by email and can only buy chips. Our page on why social casino currency has no cash value explains the model.

The features regulars talk about, per the help centre:

  • Daily Wheel and Time Bonus: a free daily spin and an hourly bonus that stacks (see daily bonuses and our DoubleDown free chips page).
  • Diamond Club: the loyalty program, which the help centre says rewards chip purchases (see levels, XP and VIP tiers).
  • High Limit Room: doubled top jackpots and early access to new slots, opened by a paid Booster or by spinning on three days in a row.
  • Pyramid League: weekly rankings that reset every Monday, like the formats in clubs, leagues and clans.
  • Wonder Cards: seasonal card albums (see collections and albums).
  • Mission Pass challenges, plus video poker, blackjack and roulette alongside the slots.

What costs money in DoubleDown Casino?

The app is free. As listed in the Canadian App Store on October 13, 2026, its ten in-app purchase items ran from $3.99 to $129.99 (CAD), with names such as Ante Up, Lucky 7s, High Society, Let it Ride and High Roller. Google Play’s Canadian listing gave $1.29 to $493.99 per item on the same date.

Money also buys advantages: some packages include a Booster, adding a second daily wheel spin, a bigger Time Bonus and High Limit Room access. Diamond Club points come from purchases, and higher tiers get 20 to 70% more chips on select purchases plus weekly vouchers that enlarge the next one. DoubleDown’s annual report says substantially all of its social casino revenue comes from chip sales.

Watch where you pay. The help centre promotes buying directly from DoubleDown, processed by Xsolla, with 20% more chips per package, but DoubleDown’s terms say all its sales are final. Purchases made through Apple or Google can at least be raised with the store, as our refunds guide explains. See also how in-app purchases are priced and offered.

Is DoubleDown Casino legit, and what is the catch?

It is a legitimate, long-established app from a listed company. The catch: its terms say outright that the game offers no monetary reward and no chance to win real money or tangible prizes.

DoubleDown’s own legal history includes a far bigger settlement than Slotomania’s (US$38 million) or Big Fish Casino’s (US$155 million). In Benson v. DoubleDown Interactive, filed in 2018 in federal court in Washington State, players argued that the Facebook and mobile game broke Washington’s gambling and consumer protection laws, the theory the Ninth Circuit had accepted for Big Fish Casino that year.

In August 2022, DoubleDown and IGT agreed to a US$415 million settlement fund, with IGT’s subsidiaries paying US$269.75 million and DoubleDown US$145.25 million. The court approved it, and DoubleDown made its final payment in June 2023. The suit was brought for players in the United States and turned on Washington law, not Canadian law, and Canadian players buy chips under the same no-cash-value terms described above.
